According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Ford is expected to announce today that it will build its U.S.-bound Fiesta in Mexico. The subcompact hatch that will go on sale in Europe and Asia this year is expected to arrive in North American showrooms by 2010. If the report turns out to be true –and we have no reason to doubt it-, Ford’s decision not to produce the Fiesta in the U.S. will be a major blow to union plants. In a statement made earlier this year, United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger had noted that the union would try its hardest to convince Ford that it could make money by building its smallest cars like the Fiesta on U.S. turf.
